Crowns
Crowns are full coverage restorations that protect the entire tooth above the gum lines. Unlike fillings, crowns go over the tooth instead of inside it. Cosmetic dental crowns serve a dual purpose. Not only do they protect and restore your damaged teeth, but this cosmetic dental treatment also improves its appearance.
When is a dental crown necessary, we typically recommend crowns on teeth that have experienced:
- Severe tooth decay
- Large fractures or tooth wear
- Deep cavities
- Root canal therapy
Porcelain Dental Crowns
Although crowns can be made of many different materials, Dr. Seese chooses to use porcelain. Porcelain closely resembles the appearance of natural enamel and it also functions very well on a long-term basis. Treatment will take two visits to our dental practice. At the first appointment, we will remove the entire damaged tooth surface and shape the tooth appropriately so that it can support a crown. An impression of the tooth is made which we use to create a model of your teeth. This model is then sent to our cosmetic dental lab where your permanent porcelain crown will be made. In less than two weeks, we will have you return to bond your permanent crown into place. Dr. Seese will make any necessary adjustments and discuss home care with you. Porcelain crowns that are properly maintained can last as long as a decade or more.
We recommend visiting Smiles by Seese for professional cleanings and exams twice each year to keep your porcelain crowns as healthy as possible. During your cleaning, our hygienists will discuss home care methods that keep the underlying tooth free of new decay.
